South Bay Rapid Construction

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall on the South Bay Rapid transit corridor in Chula Vista. When completed, the 21-mile South Bay Rapid route will connect residents to employment and activity centers in Downtown San Diego and the South Bay. South Bay Rapid will serve offices, shopping centers, recreational facilities, transit-oriented residential communities, schools, and Park & Ride lots, as well as the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The system will bring an additional choice to travelers in South County – providing a fast, comfortable service at high frequencies similar to the San Diego Trolley in order to make transit more convenient. MTS will operate the South Bay Rapid service that is expected to begin in 2017.

Plaza Bonita Segment of Sweetwater Bikeway Complete

South Bay bike riders joined County Supervisor Greg Cox, SANDAG Board Chair Jack Dale, and National City Mayor Ron Morrison at a recent celebration to mark the completion of the Sweetwater Bikeway. The Plaza Bonita segment is a half-mile Class I bikeway (a physically protected path for bike riders) on the west side of Plaza Bonita Road. The bike path closes a gap in the Sweetwater Bikeway and makes an important connection to the Bayshore Bikeway, which will circle San Diego Bay when complete. Currently, 15 miles of the 24-mile Bayshore Bikeway are complete. More Info

Blue Line Trolley Renewal

The Blue Line Trolley is the busiest transit service in the San Diego region and serves more than 55,000 weekday passengers. As part of the $660 million Trolley Renewal effort, the Blue Line has been upgraded with low-floor Trolley cars that are more accessible and comfortable. The new cars make boarding easier and faster for all riders, including parents with strollers, bike riders, and passengers with disabilities. A celebration was held earlier this year at the 8th Street Station in National City to mark this milestone. In addition to the new vehicles, Trolley Renewal includes upgrading station platforms, shelters, power substations, overhead catenary wires, and tracks. As part of the system-wide overhaul, next vehicle arrival signs and new amenities also have been installed at stations. Construction on the remaining four Blue Line stations is scheduled to be completed by this summer. Trolley Renewal is largely funded by the regional TransNet half-cent sales tax administered by SANDAG.  More Info

I-805 South Express Lanes Project Update

Construction crews in South County continue to make progress on the first phase of the Interstate 805 (I-805) South Express Lanes Project. In National City, improvements along I-805 between East Plaza Boulevard and State Route 54 (SR 54) include the addition of a northbound auxiliary lane and a southbound outside through lane. When completed this fall, the new lanes will improve freeway flow and alleviate congestion by accommodating traffic entering and exiting the freeway. Work continues on the East Palomar Street Direct Access Ramp (DAR), Transit Station, and Park & Ride project in Chula Vista, which is slated for completion this summer. When the first phase of the I-805 South Express Lanes Project is completed later this year, it will help reduce travel times, enhance traffic flow, and provide new choices for travelers in South County.
